Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has announced that the government has gazetted national rail policy frameworks that allow the private sector to intervene and operate passenger rail services.

Addressing the media on Monday from Wolmerton Train Depot, in Pretoria North, Mbalula said in relation to passenger rail services, the new policy sought to address in particular capacity challenges through allowing private sector investors the opportunity to operate passenger rail services.

"Where Prasa [Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa] cannot run services, the policy introduces concessions on other lines where private sector can operate services. The white paper introduces secondary interventions that will give effect to institutional repositioning and allow for on-rail competition.

Seems positive. Is it possible that the national gov might actually give the rail network in CoCT to the metro?

Because going off this and the feasibility study in CoCT, possibility seems high... Could be wrong tho

Yea.. who is going to go into this business? Trains being burned, tracks stolen etc.

If they can provide security for people , tracks, trains etc... then good luck. Going to cost a lot of ZAR.

Well, if they provide adequate everything then I think it might be lucrative to the business involved, the gov (taxes and what not) and to the actual commuters.

Our economy would certainly get a boost.

Besides needing fake private companies to get tenders for cadres, they also need the private sector to remove the shacks from the lines. The good ANC would never do that to their people.

What real private company would be dumb enough to invest in railways that have shacks on them? And if you want to remove the shacks you have provide better housing. And EFF and ANC will judge if it is better or not.

Well, if they own the rail where the shacks are, the company is within rights to get the shacks off?

Only not in SA:

1. ANC will allow money in from the private sector but they will never allow it to own it.
2. No, they will not be within their rights, the law protects the infrastructure destroyer.

So basically "We" (government) stole as much as we can now we want new people to take over and see if they can turn it around.

It will only work if the government have minimum shares so that the private sector can make the calls and not the other way around

There are socialist laws in place that protects people who build shacks on the tracks. Also, crime is not taken seriously in an ANC run country and the vandalism will continue. The only solution is to get tough on these destroyers like China but that will never happen in SA.

By private sector, do they mean established companies? or companies that were registered a few months ago in the name of some gov connected thief's 5 year old son.

The ANC would do it, especially if they can shift the blame to someone else.
