Here are some guidelines for posting News Articles:

1) Please check that nobody has already posted the same article. Do a quick scan of the first two or three pages in this section to check for the article. You can also do a Search for the article. If you accidentally post the same article, no problem, the mods will merge it with the previous thread. Generally speaking each new news item or incident should have its own thread. Major new events or breaking stories can go in a new thread.

2) Please use the News Article Headline as your Thread Title. Please do not use the Thread Title for personal comment or opinion and try to keep it as objective as possible. Please also do not use ALL CAPS for Thread Titles. Your Thread Title may be edited by a moderator to reflect the actual article headline or content.

3) Please include a Source link in the body of the Post so that we know where you got the article from. All CURRENT news items are valid as long as they are from legitimate news sources. Please try to avoid Tabloid Articles or Opinion Pieces, you may rather post those in the Off Topic Section. If you feel the Opinion Piece is Newsworthy enough or relevant enough you post it with a tag in front of the headline [Opinion].

4) Please post your own comments and opinions in a separate post AFTER the article. Rather keep the News Article in its own post. Also try to avoid re-quoting very long articles if you are only adding one line of comment. Please do not edit or highlight the source article. Rather quote the article in a separate post.

5) When posting News Articles from other sites and major news outlets, please do not quote the entire article as this will most probably be a violation of copyright. Rather just post the link and then quote two or three of the most relevant paragraphs. We do not want people to steal the MyBB articles in their entirety so we wish to show the same respect to other sites. Quoting entire articles also steals advertising revenue from other sites. See below for an example of how to quote articles from other news sites.

6) We do have subscriptions to certain News Feeds so we are allowed to post some articles in their entirety. Please change the headlines from uppercase to lowercase and include the credit tag at the end. Please see below for an example of how to post a articles.

- OrbitalDawn

7) Posting links by themselves is generally NOT acceptable. This is considered "Link Dropping" and can be a form of Trolling. Please include a small summary of what the link is about.

8) No pictures of dead people, extreme violence please. Can you please not publish any violent or disturbing content/images, including pictures of dead people.

9) Any insulting or denigrating references to Racial/National/Genetic groups will be removed (please report them as your normally would). But insults directed at political or ideological groups will be more leniently evaluated and are generally classed as free speech. Please understand this distinction. References to religious groups will be evaluated when reported but are generally frowned upon as incitement.

10) Please do not link to articles that are paywalled

11) Please reference articles in the OP, not tweets.

The ‘Established Members’ with at least 50 posts and a membership of 3 months requirement still applies.

I recall something on TV recently regards various social media quoting news stories from the major outlets.

The opinion from outlets interviewed regards the practice, was that they were quite happy with the situation, provided the story was quoted in it's original form, not edited in any way (as in changing what people were quoted as saying etc), and the source provided along with a link redirecting to the original story.

Can you find a link for us?

I can see how it would be fair if reciprocal, but I can also see how it steals or deprives of advertising revenue.

I do not remember the program, but a lawyer specializing in "social media" was being interviewed & then various representatives of major news outlets were interviewed. (BBC was one of them).

Not sure how it can steal or deprive ad revenue, say for example a story appears on BBC.
I quote it here, folk here read it (and are exposed to advertising on MYBB), they then follow the link to the original story at BBC & are subjected to more advertising there as well.
So both sites benefit from the traffic.

I am of course possibly getting the advertising angle all wrong tho - just my simplistic understanding !

Does RPM not check before posting duplicate news items ?

Very very often a story is posted here, then a few hours later RPM posts the exact same story as in the photo linked below:

How is this happening ?

If people post the full article here, then there is no need to visit the link and the original site doesn't get visited.
People just read the entire thing on MyBB.
So they get no advertising clicks out of the story = Revenue lost.

It happens when I post the story before rpm, and he then later posts the same news story in the breaking news section of the website.
All the breaking news articles also have a thread automatically made for them in the CA section so a new thread automatically appears even though I have already posted the story.
But you don't have to worry about it because when that happens I just merge my thread into his. No worries.

Aah
Makes sense.
Thanx for explaining that, I've been scratching my head for a few months over this :D

as per the OP point 1

perhaps Gary, jes and RPM can come to some form of agreement as we're getting lots of duplicate and triplicate threads due to each of them posting the same or similar article e.g.

REPEAT1.JPG
REPEAT2.JPG
REPEAT3.JPG

Point 1 is only with reference to THIS section. I don't think they are so concerned with duplicate articles appearing in different sections of the site.
Some of that is unavoidable as the new threads are linked to articles which appear in the news sections of the site.
They just don't want the same articles appearing in the SAME sections.

I appreciate that Gary but still, it leads to duplicate/triplicate threads all over the place, surely there's a smarter way of doing it as personally I don't want to drift all over the site to see what people are saying about the same thing in different threads

I actually agree with you, but I have come to realise that readers of the site that check every section are actually very rare.
The vast majority only frequent one or two sections, or enter the forum through the links on the front page.
They don't actually see the duplicates, and if only one thread existed in another section, then they would miss it all together.

fair enough, my preferred approach to the site is based on the Today's Posts link, I realise you do your best to post your stuff in the right threads however as per my post above on the etolling both RPM and jes bombed their threads into the Broadband and IT News sub forum so I'll blame them :p

No problem, but you should still feel free to report duplicates when you see them by RBPing all the links to the mods.

Please delete RPM and jes they are duplicates of Garyvdh thank you :D

Folks, just a reminder of the guidelines as per the opening post, especially this part:

5) When posting News Articles from other sites and major news outlets, please do not quote the entire article as this will most probably be a violation of copyright. Rather just post the link and then quote two or three of the most relevant paragraphs. We do not want people to steal the MyBB articles in their entirety so we wish to show the same respect to other sites. Quoting entire articles also steals advertising revenue from other sites. May as well get rid of this guideline, since rpm totally ignores it, meaning there is not much incentive for anyone else to comply....

etc etc

You are confused.

MyBB subscribes to News24wire that allows rpm, Gary, myself and the mybb journos to legally use their content in full. And that is the condition..... we may NOT edit their content if we copy it and we post the source, which you will see is a link to the news24 article.
