I'm going to try and collect all router information here about what people have got working. If you get a router working please post the model, firmware and any tricks you needed to make things work. Also post the model of the Cell C modem you have and if things like SMS / USSD is supported.

General issues
Router not supplying enough power to the USB modem?
Try a 5V USB power injector, such as the MikroTik 5VUSB adapter.

Throughput problems? (modem is fast on PC but slow on router)
Could be due to bandwidth control on the router. More here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/394217?p=7595473#post7595473

Mobile Internet + Wireless Router/Modem

Hi CellC mobile internet peeps,

I recently signed up to the 5GB 21 mbps CellC deal in CT and am loving it.
I'm now thinking it would be great to be able to use it wirelessly - for laptop and iphone, etc.
Has anyone looked into using it with some form of mobile wireless router converter?
Does something like this even exist in SA?

thanks
/d

I'm thinking the MikroTik RB411U and a Wireless-N card might be a good solution.

I bought a Netgear wireless router from Incredible connection, can't remember the product code but it was the only one there from Netgear and works like a dream (once it's set-up which took a few minutes!). Works fine with the Cell C black dongle.

I have used three of these products, a Netgear MBR624GU, a Huawei D100T, and a Dovado.

All of them work fine, although I believe that there may be more modern products out now (supporting Wireless "N", for example).

The Netgear and Dovado have new firmware available that would support the Cell C E1820, not sure about the Huawei.

Currently running the Cellc 21mbps dongle through a Netgear MBR624GU router and both laptop and iphone are connected via wifi and happy.

bought the Netgear router second hand for R600
the CellC deal is R2999 over 12 months

so that's R300 per month for a 6mbps (on average) home wireless network. pretty sweet.

Methinks you would have got a better deal with a TP-LINK MR3420 3G wireless-N router: it has better WLAN performance, is cheaper AND would have been in warranty; but hey, that's just my opinion... :p

Nice find, thanks for sharing. :)

Anyone dealt with dbg.co.za or used TP-Link products before?

's for the greater good to share ..and yes and yes. ;). I've gotten several goodies (the WRT54GL is dead, long live the TL-WR1043ND!) :D from 'em in the last several months. OK, I'm in cross-Jozi delivery range but they're spot-on with their courier handling so I'd be gobsmacked to hear of a hassle sending down your way.

I've probably not been paying attention, but I can't easily find the details of the manufacturer/model of the USB modem on the R2999 package. Could someone please clue me in! I have a Dovado UMR and want to check if the 21.6mbps USB is supported)

You've got to love Cell C's approach. you are locked in for 1 year and have to pre-pay the whole year, but in exchange... you get the fastest, cheapest network in the country and a brand new 21.6 USB modem. Excellent.

Now if they could just announce JNB!!

The Dovado thread ..enjoy. :p

Huawei E1752 HSPA and 1820 HSPA+

Cell C & Dovado

Has anybody got the 21.6 modem to work on a Dovado UMR router?

Check on Dovado website. The model you are looking for is the E1820 Huawei...

I did check their website early on today and they did have it on their list for the 4G

Thanks, yes I actually got it to work last night. Incidentally, this is up in Gauteng - bought my modem in PE this week and it works here, even though not launched yet. The only further question I have is how to check the data balance through the Dovado router.

BDT & RichardG: Thanks for that. Also good news for me, the Dovado UMR supports the 1820 & even has SMS support, so I'm going up in the world (well once 4Gs arrives in JNB)!

Cheers

I have a B970b and it has the option to select GSM900 and W900 so i assume that it'll work on Cellc. Can someone verify this for me please :)

Thanks
