The Honor Magic6 Pro offers the best photographic capabilities of all the smartphones you can buy in South Africa, with devices like the Huawei P60 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro close behind.

MyBroadband used DxOMark camera ratings to find the best smartphone cameras you can officially buy in South Africa. We only included devices that have officially launched in the country.

DxOMark carries out independent benchmark tests to measure smartphone camera performance by measuring image and video quality in a highly controlled environment.

Based on the results for each device, DxOMark assigns a rating for the front and rear camera setups, which it uses to rank smartphones.

“By combining measurements reproducing real-life usages run in our labs as well as tests in natural scenes, the overall score is composed of a total of five sub-scores: Photo, Zoom, Bokeh, Preview, and Video, allowing for a quick comparison among tested smartphone cameras,” it says.

Benchmark tests are conducted with default settings and in various environments and lighting scenarios to assess different aspects of each camera system.

According to its rankings, the Honor Magic6 Pro is currently the best camera smartphone in South Africa and around the globe, scoring 158.

The Huawei Mate 60 Pro+ and Oppo Find X7 Ultra place second, both scoring 157. However, these devices haven’t officially launched in South Africa, so we didn’t include them on the list.

The Huawei P60 Pro is officially available in South Africa, and DxOMark has assigned the smartphone a camera rating of 156, making it the second-best camera smartphone in the country.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max take third place, both scoring 154. The similar score isn’t surprising, as there is no difference between the two camera setups.

It should be noted that older iPhones, like the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, also featured high-up in the rankings. However, these devices no longer appear to be sold new and were excluded from the list.

Those interested in an older device like the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max might have to settle for second-hand units.
