Telkom announces enormous price hikes on fibre, mobile

Telkom has announced substantial price hikes across its product portfolio, including its prepaid and postpaid cellular, fibre, DSL, and traditional telephone services.

Most of the price adjustments will kick in on 1 April 2024.

“Given the current inflation rate of 5.8%, tariff adjustments are necessary to ensure sustainable service excellence,” the company stated.

“Telkom, like many other South African enterprises, acknowledges the impact of macroeconomic factors and is strategically adjusting tariffs to maintain service quality while remaining competitive in the market.”

Fibre-to-the-home prices will increase by an average of 10%, DSL prices by 15%, and business voice prices by 12.5%.

Out-of-bundle voice rates are increasing by 11.25%, while out-of-bundle data and SMS rates will increase by 11.42%.

Mercifully, Telkom said there would be no increases to ad-hoc or recurring prepaid bundles.

Contract customers will see a 6% average price increase on their subscription fees from 1 June 2024. Other fees like device instalments, insurance, value added services, and recurring bundles will not see additional increases.

“We are unwavering in our dedication to providing an exceptional experience across our mobile and fixed portfolios,” said Telkom consumer and small business CEO Lunga Siyo.

Telkom highlighted the following specific tariff adjustments:

  • Consumer Fixed Voice Services: Tariffs will increase by an average of 15% for services such as Line Rental, Prepaid FLLA, Closer calling plans, and installation charges. SmartVoice customers will not experience any increases.

  • Post-paid Plans: Monthly subscription costs for post-paid plans (mobile voice plans such as FlexOn and Infinite, as well as LTE data plans) will increase by an average of 6% starting from 1 June 2024. Other fees like device instalment fees, insurance, Value Added Services, or recurring bundles will not see additional increases.
  • Small and Medium Business (SMB) Voice Services: Tariffs will rise by an average of 12.5% for Line Rental, Installation & Calling plans, and 5% for PABX products.

Details regarding other fibre network operator products will be shared closer to implementation.
  • YEP Product Portfolio: An average tariff adjustment of 5% will be applied to products such as YEPSynch & Banners, Reputation Management, and Social Marketing Tools.

“Telkom remains committed to providing the best value to its customers through high-quality products and services,” said Siyo.
