Most affordable RTX 40-series gaming laptops in South Africa

Nvidia launched its GeForce RTX 40-series laptop graphics processing units (GPUs) in January 2023, and South African gamers looking for a great mobile gaming experience have several options available to them.

However, these powerful mobile GPUs can push up the price of laptops significantly. MyBroadband looked for the cheapest Nvidia RTX 40-series-powered laptops available in the country.

The Nvidia RTX 40 series GPUs first started appearing in laptops available to consumers in February 2023. The series includes:

• The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050;
• The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060;
• The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070;
• The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080; and,
• The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090.

According to the manufacturer, the top-tier RTX 4090 is the world’s fastest laptop GPU and is claimed to be three times more power efficient than its predecessor.

We looked for the cheapest gaming laptops featuring each model in the RTX 40 series.

The most affordable Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050-powered laptop we found is the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 from Evetech for R16,999.

It combines the 6GB RTX 4050 with 8GB of DDR5 RAM and a 512GB NVMe SSD. It features a 15.6 1,920 x 1,080p display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Wootware’s Wootbook series offers the most affordable RTX 4060, 4070, and 4080-powered gaming laptops in South Africa.

The RTX 4060-powered Wootbook Nova configuration we selected costs R22,367.

It features a 16-inch 2,560 x 1,600p IPS display with a 240Hz refresh rate, 16GB of DDR5 RAM, and 256GB of NVMe SSD storage.

Prices take a significant step up when looking at models with more powerful GPUs.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070-powered Wootbook Ultra Y16 configuration we selected costs R29,497.

It packs 15GB of DDR5 RAM, a 512GB NVMe SSD, and features a 16-inch 2,560 x 1,600p IPS display with a 240Hz refresh rate.

Wootware also sells a Wootbook Ultra Y16 packing an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 card with 12GB of video memory.

It features a similar display to the 4070-powered model and packs 16GB of DDR5 RAM and 512GB of SSD storage for R44,497.

However, it should be noted that the Wootbook configurations we selected were “bring-your-own-licence” regarding the Windows operating system.

Customers can opt for Wootware to install and activate Windows on the laptops, which adds R2,600 to R3,300 to the total price.

The most affordable 4090-powered laptop we found is the HP OMEN Laptop 17 from Evetech for R74,999.

It has a 17.3-inch 2,560 x 1,440-pixel IPS display with a 165Hz refresh rate, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, and 1TB of SSD storage.
