Samsung Galaxy A55 and Galaxy A35 launched — South African pricing

Samsung has released the latest smartphones in its budget and mid-range catalogues — the Galaxy A35 5G and Galaxy A55 5G.

By introducing these phones, the tech giant says it is making the innovations of its flagship series available to those on a tighter budget.

“With the Galaxy A series, we are expanding our latest technologies to a wider audience so that more people can benefit from them,” Samsung said.

The duo features 6.6-inch AMOLED FHD+ displays, just 0.2 inches smaller than the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s screen, Samsung’s latest powerhouse flagship.

These screens have refresh rates of up to 120Hz, but the Galaxy A55’s display adds HDR10+ support.

The Galaxy A55 and A35 have 5,000mAh batteries and support up to 25W fast charging, the same as in their predecessors.

However, Samsung has upgraded the entry-level RAM on the 128GB Galaxy A35 from 4GB to 6GB and added 8GB as an option, while the 256GB version comes with 8GB RAM.

The entry-level Galaxy A55 with 128GB storage gets 8GB RAM instead of 6GB on the A54, with the option of 12GB, whereas the A55 256GB gets 12GB RAM.

Both are equipped with in-house Samsung chips, namely the Exynos 1480 for the Galaxy A55 and Exynos 1380 for the Galaxy A35.

Regarding photography, both smartphones boast three rear-facing cameras, with the same 50MP primary camera and 5MP macro lens.

The Galaxy A55 gets a slightly better ultrawide shooter with a 12MP lens instead of the A35’s 8MP sensor.

The Galaxy A55 also benefits from advanced AI Image Signal Processing to produce clearer images in low-light conditions.

Samsung said this is the first time this technology has been featured in the Galaxy A series.

Another major focus has been on security improvements, with both devices featuring Samsung’s flagship security software — Samsung Knox Vault.

It will protect against software as well as hardware threats in the following ways

  • Encrypting users’ private data
  • Protecting lock screen credentials
  • Real-time threat detection
  • Provide app security checks
  • Block malicious commands from USB cables

Like the Galaxy S24 series, The Galaxy A55 5G and A35 5G will be eligible for Android OS and One UI updates for the next five years (four generations).
