While Vodacom South Africa’s average annual tariff hikes for contract and broadband customers are below inflation, those with SIM-only packages without optional value-added services will get above-inflation price increases.
Vodacom announced the price adjustments, which will take effect from 1 April 2024, in a media statement and notices on its website on Friday, 23 February 2024.
The mobile network said that the average customer’s total bill would increase by roughly 4.6%, lower than the 5.3% increase in headline inflation for January 2024.
In its notification to customers, Vodacom said the hikes were kept as “low as possible” while still providing “superior” quality.
“The decision comes at a time when Vodacom continues to invest heavily into maintaining network resilience to deliver an enhanced customer experience,” the company stated.
It also blamed various challenges the industry faced that increased operational costs for mobile operators — such as base station vandalism, battery theft, load-shedding, currency weakness, and high inflation — for the price hikes.
Vodacom said that customers would be cushioned from the impacts of the increases, with insurance premiums, hardware and device costs, valued-added-services, and out-of-bundle rates remaining unchanged.
It is only when taking these costs into account that the customer’s total monthly bill hike amounts to an average of 4.6%.
The subscription prices on their own will cost an average of 8% more.
MyBroadband looked at the Vodacom postpaid and broadband price changes in more detail to highlight some of the other key adjustments.
RED Flexi plans
All the Red Flexi price changes — both for existing and legacy plans — are accompanied by increases in airtime.
Among the biggest price hikes in this category on a percentage basis was the Red Flexi 55 package going from R55 to R60 — a 9.1% increase. However, this also comes with airtime increasing by R5.
Nevertheless, one should consider that Vodacom is also adjusting the prices of voice and data bundles from March 2024, so the value of the packages might remain unchanged — or be worse.

RED Integrated Postpaid and VIP plans
In these product ranges, all existing packages will receive an increase in mobile data allocations alongside their price hikes, while legacy plans will be hiked without any increases in benefits.
Vodacom said the maximum data increase customers will be getting is 11%.
In real terms, we found the monthly data allocations will be bumped by between 50MB and 1GB on the Red Integrated and RED VIP plans. Voice minutes remain unchanged across all plans.
Vodacom has also scratched the “Unlimited” moniker from some of its legacy VIP plans.

Mobile Broadband and Home Internet plans
This segment consists of a wide range of data-focused packages — including legacy Smart plans, current Mobile Broadband contracts, and capped and uncapped Home Internet plans, both current and legacy.
As is the case for RED Integrated and RED VIP customers, those on legacy plans will be paying more without any benefits in monthly data allocations.
For example, a Smart XL+ customer will be paying R193.99 instead of R179 per month, an increase of around 8.4%.
Regular Mobile Broadband and Mobile Broadband TopUp contracts will also see their prices hiked without receiving any additional monthly data.
The same is the case for capped Home Internet products, while uncapped Home Internet packages will also retain their current maximum speeds.
