Cheapest 4K TVs in South Africa — prices from R4,500

Ultra-high definition (UHD) or 4K TVs offer a significant upgrade over 1080p TVs, and South African residents can get a 4K TV for as little as R4,499.

4K displays have nearly 8.3 million pixels, compared to around four times the number of pixels in 1080p displays, providing a sharper image containing more detail.

While satellite broadcasters in South Africa like DStv and Openview don’t offer regular 4K broadcasts, several streaming services — including Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and Apple TV+ — offer up to 4K video streaming.

Prices of 4K TVs have fallen significantly since the technology was first made available to consumers.

LG launched its first 4K TV in 2012, offering customers a massive 84-inch panel for $20,000 (R164,230).

These days, South African residents have several options for less than R6,500, with prices starting at R4,499.

However, it should be noted that big-screen 4K TVs — like LG’s first — aren’t available in the country in this price range, with the largest listed here being 55-inches.

The cheapest option is TCL’s P635-series 4K Android TV for R4,499. While many South Africans might not know TCL’s brand well, it has been around in countries like the US for many years.

The brand launched its first TVs in South Africa in October 2021.

For R500 more, South African residents can choose from two 4K Hisense models: the 43-inch E7K series and the 43-inch A6K series.

The former offers quantum dot technology and Dolby Vision, while the A6K model features HDR and Dolby Digital.

Samsung fans also have a 43-inch option available to them. Those living in South Africa can get the 43-inch Samsung CU7000 series 4K Smart TV for R5,599.

Several 50 and 55-inch models are available for less than R6,500, with the most affordable 50-inch model being Itel’s Tomu 4K Smart TV, available for R5,895.

Condere sells the cheapest 55-inch TV at R5,599.

Other notable 50 and 55-inch options include Toshiba’s C350MN-series 50-inch 4K Smart TV for R5,999, Hisense’s E7K-series 50-inch 4K Smart TV also for R5,999, and TCL’s P635-series 55-inch 4K Smart TV for R6,499.
