Microsoft’s latest ugly retro sweater boasts the iconic Windows XP background

Microsoft has revealed the latest addition to its ugly retro-computing sweater series, and this year’s edition is the iconic Windows XP default wallpaper, complete with a blue taskbar.

The desktop wallpaper is a photograph of a green hill and blue sky with white clouds in Sonoma County, California, and blue hemming at the bottom and on the sleeve represents the taskbar.

There is also a large mouse pointer hovering over the hill.

“This holiday season, Windows is bringing a touch of nostalgia to its ugly sweaters by going back to the early 2000s in the Time of XP,” Microsoft said in a blog post.

“This year’s sweater features the iconic Bliss backdrop from Windows XP.”

The sweater is available in sizes ranging from small to triple-XL, and all sizes are priced at $70 (R1,296).

All sizes are expected to be delivered between 2 and 6 December, depending on location.

Microsoft says sales of the Bliss sweater will generate proceeds to benefit The Nature Conservancy and its “initiatives to combat the climate and biodiversity crisis”.

Past editions of Microsoft’s ugly retro-computing sweater tradition included a Minesweeper motif, MS Paint, the Windows logo, and Clippy — the now-discontinued Office Assistant.
