JINX to establish presence in R2.8-billion Equinix data centre

The Johannesburg Internet Exchange (JINX) will soon establish a presence in Equinix’s new JN1 International Business Exchange data centre.

According to Equinix, the data centre will launch in mid-2024, and JINX will be the first Internet Exchange Point (IXP) partner to be housed in the facility.

The carrier-neutral facility will provide public peering services to Internet connectivity and content providers hosted at JN1.

“The partnership of IXP and neutral colocation provider is a critically important feature of internet digital ecosystems hosted at Equinix facilities worldwide,” the company said in a statement.

“[The] JINX and Equinix partnership will support and accelerate growth, innovation and evolution of South Africa’s digital economy and e-GDP.”

Equinix recently appointed Sandile Dube as its managing director in South Africa. Dube moves to the role from a similar position at HPE.

He will work closely with local businesses and multinational companies to establish an interconnection platform in the new data centre.

“We are delighted to welcome JINX on-board as a well-established and trusted partner that is firmly embedded in the connectivity fabric of South Africa,” said Dube.

“We will be launching with a remarkably strong partner base that includes some of the biggest cloud and connectivity companies in Africa, and JINX forms an integral part of that strategy.”

Prenesh Padayachee (pictured), INX-ZA chair, voiced the company’s pleasure in partnering with Equinix.

“The carrier-neutral colocation model is globally recognized as the optimal environment for Internet services to flourish,” said Padayachee.

“Equinix has an outstanding reputation for championing growth of digital economies, hosting thousands of service providers and serving billions of Internet users worldwide,” he continued.

“We are thrilled to be launching our new node in Equinix JN1 Data centre and we look forward to delivering on our shared vision, growing and evolving Internet services in Johannesburg and South Africa together.”

Equinix announced its plans to invest $160 million (R2.8 million) to build its first facility on the continent — the Johannesburg 1 Business Exchange data centre — in December 2022.

“South Africa was a big target for Equinix as it is the most developed economy in sub-Saharan Africa,” said Eugene Bergen, Equinix EMEA president.

“We are focusing to get into Africa, and we are looking at another five or six countries to enter.”
